Unit #3
January 20-26
Assignment 3.1
Continue reading The Scarlet Letter this week.  Read pp 239-325 for this week.

For this assignment, I would like you to give me "bullet" statements of what has happened in this weeks reading and submit.

College Students:  I would also like you to comment next to the bullet statements as to your reaction to what is happening in the reading (comment to at least five of the bullet statements).  This means I want some "thought" into your "thoughts".  DO NOT expect credit for a few phrases spread here and there amongst the bullet statements.

Title the assignment:  "3.1; Scarlet Letter pp 231-325 bullets".

Assignment 3.4
In this assignment, you will be clicking on the novel icon below.  This will take you to the Sparknotes website for the novel.

Your job for this assignment?
~Read the "plot overview"

~write 12 bullet statements listing the
events of the plot in order, as well as the characters
and setting  (who did what, when?)

~from these bullet statements, write a one paragraph
summary of the plot.  Make sure you include the setting,
the main characters, and what happened in the story.  Also, a good summary includes the basics of the entire storyline, rather than just the beginning, or your favorite parts.

~write a well-developed response to the novel.  Did you like it?  Did you hate it?  Why?

Here is how "your response" should be done:
First sentence MUST tell me whether you liked the story or not and include your two reasons why you liked or didn't like the story.  The rest of that first paragraph MUST support your first reason with examples from the novel to back up your reasoning.  The second paragraph MUST support your second reason with examples from the novel.

Remember:  The second sentence in the first paragraph MUST be your topic sentence for the first reason.  The first sentence of the second paragraph MUST be your topic sentence for the second reason.

The "response" to the story must be 5-7 well-developed sentences for each of the two paragraphs to receive full credit.

Note:  Always submit your Summary/Response Paper as:
Title of Document: "Summary/Response--Name of Novel

College Students:  Your initial comment must be 8-12 well thought out sentences
(30 minutes)

The Odyssey
~How does Homer portray the relationship between gods and men in the novel?
~What roles do the gods play in human life?
~One of the most important cultural values in the Odyssey is that of xenia, a Greek concept encompassing the generosity and courtesy shown to those who are far from home. Why might hospitality have held more significance in Homer’s time than it does in today’s world?
~What is the role of family in the Odyssey? What values characterize the relationship between fathers and sons?
~What is the role of women in the Odyssey? Focusing especially on Penelope, Calypso, or Anticleia, discuss how women are portrayed in this epic.
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
~Evaluate the character of Edmund. To what extent is he a helpless victim of the Witch's deceit (and Turkish Delight), and to what extent is he the master of his own fate?
~What does Narnia symbolize?
~Do you feel that C. S. Lewis's representation of the White Witch is sexist? Is Lewis a misogynist (someone who hates women)?
~What is the effect of Lewis's depiction of Aslan as a lion? Does it adequately express the nuances of Christ's character?
~Why is Lucy, the youngest child, the first to enter Narnia, and Edmund, the next youngest, the second to enter? Is this a coincidence, or is Lewis making a point about the ability of younger children to be more open-minded?

Assignment 3.5
Discussion Board Response.
Go to the Discussion Board on the Blackboard Site and respond to 2 initial comments.  You must write 5-7 good well thought out sentences to receive credit for this assignment
NOTICE:  You are responding well to other students, now let's work on disagreeing with students....this is an important skill to learn....how to disagree without being rude.
Here are some pointers:
Say, "I like what you said about.....but, I thought ......rather than what you said"
Say, "That response was well thought out, but I have to disagree with you since I thought...."
Say, "Are you kidding me?????  That was the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!"  Just kidding, don't say that.

It's a difficult task to disagree without sounding like "you're all that" and are a "Lit Geek", but give it a try.  I need you to respond to at least one discussion by disagreeing with what was said and give your reasons for disagreeing.  Now, none of you get offended....everyone is doing this and practicing.  No one is meaning to be mean to anyone, so put on your big boy/girl pants and don't worry about it.
