Discussion Board Initial Comment.
Go to the Discussion Board  and write your initial comment on one of the topics below. Your initial comment must be 5-7 well thought out sentences to receive credit for this assignment.
VERY IMPORTANT: You are now at a point where you should be able to do your own research for the discussion board questions.  Don't write to me and say, "but they never talked about it in the summary, so how am I supposed to answer the question?".  Google it and do some digging....this is what college will expect and you need to get used to doing it.

College Students:  Your initial comment must be 8-12 well thought out sentences
(30 minutes)

Great Expectations
~It is widely said that it is far better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Would Pip agree?
~Dickens is famous not just for writing really long, complex novels but for packing them full of social commentary. What impression do you get of London society after reading Great Expectations?
~Dickens originally published the novel in serial form (weekly parts) and then later released it in three parts. How would the reading experience be different, if you were reading it in three parts as opposed to a few chapters at a time?
~What is the novel's overall feeling about great expectations? Is it wrong to have hopes, dreams and plans—or is Pip just dreaming the wrong ones?
~For much of Great Expectations, Pip seems to believe in a stark division between good and evil, and he tends to classify people and situations as belonging to one extreme or the other: for instance, despite their respective complexities, he believes that Estella is good and the convict is evil.  What do you think of the two?

A Farewell To Arms
~What might the novel look like from Catherine’s perspective? (Remember, she is dead.) Do we feel like we get a clear picture of her from Frederic? Would she be a more or less reliable narrator than Frederic?
~A Farewell to Arms is one of the most famous war novels ever written. Unlike many war stories, however, the novel does not glorify the experience of combat or offer us portraits of heroes as they are traditionally conceived. What is the novel’s attitude toward war? Is it fair to call A Farewell to Arms an antiwar novel?
~Discuss Frederic Henry as a narrator. Assuming that, as a character, he is writing his story many years after living it.
~A Farewell to Arms is a love story as well as a war novel. Discuss the role of love in the novel: how does love affect the characters’ perceptions of war? How does the war shape the characters’ love story?
~Critics often discuss Hemingway’s fiction as a celebration of a specific type of manhood. What kind of man does A Farewell to Arms celebrate, and how does Hemingway achieve this effect?

Assignment 9.8

College Students Only

This week, I would like you to focus on one particular thing you learned from class this week and write exclusively on that topic.  For example, if an event happened in Oliver Twist that really made you think, write about it, or if something happened at home, write about it.  It doesn't have to be a learning experience necessarily from the course material, it may be an experience that happened while 'living life"

To receive full credit, you should have 10-15 well-thought out sentences (which means several paragraphs written in correct form...topic sentences with support)

(30 minutes)
