Unit #4
January 27-February 2
Assignment 4.1
Continue reading The Scarlet Letter this week.  Read to p. 327-the end of the book for this week.

For this assignment, I would like you to give me "bullet" statements of what has happened in this weeks reading and submit.

College Students:  I would also like you to comment next to the bullet statements as to your reaction to what is happening in the reading (comment to at least five of the bullet statements).  This means I want some "thought" into your "thoughts".  DO NOT expect credit for a few phrases spread here and there amongst the bullet statements.

Title the assignment:  "4.1; Scarlet Letter bullets".

Assignment 4.3
In this assignment, you will be clicking on the novel icon below.  This will take you to the Sparknotes website for the novel.

Your job for this assignment?
~Read the "plot overview"

~write 12 bullet statements listing the
events of the plot in order, as well as the characters
and setting  (who did what, when?)

~from these bullet statements, write a one paragraph
summary of the plot.  Make sure you include the setting,
the main characters, and what happened in the story.  Also, a good summary includes the basics of the entire storyline, rather than just the beginning, or your favorite parts.

Change in plan....this week, DO NOT give me a two paragraph reponse like you have done in the past.  I want you to write me a paragraph (7-10 sentences; college students need to give me 12-15 sentences) about how the story, or a part of the story, relates to your life....or lessons you learned from the story.

Submit 4.3 by January 30 (30 points)

Assignment 4.4
Discussion Board Initial Comment.
Go to the Discussion Board  and write your initial comment on one of the topics below. Your initial comment must be 5-7 well thought out sentences to receive credit for this assignment.

VERY IMPORTANT: You are now at a point where you should be able to do your own research for the discussion board questions.  Don't write to me and say, "but they never talke about it in the summary, so how am I supposed to answer the question?".  Google it and do some digging....this is what college will expect and you need to get used to doing it.

College Students:  Your initial comment must be 8-12 well thought out sentences
(30 minutes)

Red Badge of Courage
~Does knowing that Crane had never personally experienced war change your view of the book and its accuracy/realism? Why or why not?
~Do you get a sense of Crane’s attitude toward his character Henry Fleming while reading? Does he respect Henry? Hate him? Mock him? Where do you see this most clearly?
~How do Crane’s views differ from those of Henry’s? Particularly on topics like nature, God, and war?
~Is Fleming a likeable character? A sympathetic one? Do you identify with him at all?

Lord of the Flies
~How could this novel be described as an allegory? If it is an allegory, what message does Golding seem to want to get across to his readers? What allegorical roles are the characters playing?
~What is the role of religion in the lives of the boys? Is their religion based on Christianity, or does it seem more pagan?
~Would this story have been different in any important ways if there had been both boys and girls on the island? In other words, is this a story about the capacity of humans for violence, or is it a story about the male capacity for violence?
~Does it matter that these are kids? Would adults in the same situation act any differently?
