Unit #8
February 24-March 1
Assignment 8.1
Pages to read this week:  pp 51-93

You have several options to choose from for this assignment, pick one and submit it for 7.1

1. give me 10-15 "bullet" statements of what has happened in this week's reading.  I would also like you to comment next to 3 of the bullet statements as to your reaction to what is happening in the reading.  This means I want some "thought" into your "thoughts".
Title the assignment:  "8.1; Ollie; pp 51-93 bullets".

2.  look at page 58, about 3/4 down the page to the statement, "he changed his little bundle over to the other shoulder, and trudged on".  Reflect on this statement and all he had been through and comment in at least 200 words on how this shows Oliver's drive and desire for something better in life.
Title the assignment: 8.1; Ollie on his way to London".

3.  Describe Fagin (or as he is often called, "the Jew").  Discuss his physical, mental, and emotional characteristics as well as "who" he is.  This needs to be in your own words and from your introduction to Fagin rather than an internet search with another person's description.  I need at least 200 words for this.

Assignment 8.4
Discussion Board Initial Comment.
Go to the Discussion Board and write your initial comment on one of the topics below. Your initial comment must be 5-7 well thought out sentences to receive credit for this assignment.
VERY IMPORTANT: You are now at a point where you should be able to do your own research for the discussion board questions.  Don't write to me and say, "but they never talked about it in the summary, so how am I supposed to answer the question?".  Google it and do some digging....this is what college will expect and you need to get used to doing it.

College Students:  Your initial comment must be 8-12 well thought out sentences
(30 minutes)

Jane Eyre
~In what ways might Jane Eyre be considered a feminist novel?
~Does the book criticize or reinforce existing Victorian social prejudices?
~What would happen to the story if Jane were beautiful instead of plain? Would it matter?
~If Jane and Rochester are "akin," then what is their "kind"? What do they actually share, and what made them similar in the first place?
~Does the reader feel sorry for Bertha Mason? Does Rochester treat her fairly? Does she seem as bad as he suggests?

Robinson Crusoe
~What might be the appeal of a book like Robinson Crusoe to 21st-century readers?
~How would you characterize Crusoe's relationship to Friday?
~How might some of the ideas we find in Robinson Crusoe be a problematic for readers in the 21st century?
~In many ways Crusoe appears to be the same sort of person at the end of the novel as he is at the beginning. Despite decades of solitude and exile, wars with cannibals, and the subjugation of a mutiny, Crusoe hardly seems to grow or develop. Is Crusoe an unchanging character, or does he change in subtle ways as a result of his ordeal?
~Crusoe spends much time on the island devising ways to escape it. But when he finally does escape, his return to Europe is anticlimactic. Nothing he finds there, not even friends or family, is described with the same interest evoked earlier by his fortress or farm. Indeed, at the end of the novel Crusoe returns to the island. Why does Defoe portray the island originally as a place of captivity and then later as a desired destination?

College Students Only

This week, I would like you to focus on one particular thing you learned from class this week and write exclusively on that topic.  For example, if an event happened in Oliver Twist that really made you think, write about it, or if something happened at home, write about it.  It doesn't have to be a learning experience necessarily from the course material, it may be an experience that happened while 'living life"

To receive full credit, you should have 15-20 well-thought out sentences (which means several paragraphs written in correct form...topic sentences with support)
