Unit #7
February 17-23
Assignment 7.1
We will begin reading "Oliver Twist" this week.  It's a stinkin' long book and one of my favorites.  I don't want to be in a huge hurry to finish it, but we will be moving along pretty quickly.  I will try to keep the number of pages assigned under 50 so you don't all die on me.

Pages to read this week:  pp 1-50

You have several options to choose from for this assignment, pick one and submit it for 7.1

1. give me 10-15 "bullet" statements of what has happened in this week's reading.  I would also like you to comment next to 3 of the bullet statements as to your reaction to what is happening in the reading.  This means I want some "thought" into your "thoughts".
Title the assignment:  "7.1; Ollie; pp 1-50 bullets".
(2 hours)

2.  Write two journal (diary) entries.  One from Mrs. Sowerberry and one from Mr. Bumble's perspectives and how they feel about Oliver.  Use first-person and write at least 100 words for EACH entry.  Title the assignment: "7.1 journal entry"

3.  Pick a character from the story so far and discuss what would be different if this character reacted differently than they did.  For instance, what if Noah Claypole treated Oliver kindly?  What would the story be like then?  Write 200 words.  Title the assignment: "7.1 character reaction"

Assignment 7.3
In this assignment, you will be going to the site "60 Second Recap"
and watching videos discussing 1984
(click on the icon).  When you get to the site, look on the right
hand column at the section labeled "Recaps for this Book".
Watch the "Plot: 1884" and the two "theme" videos
You need to take notes over each video.

Some of you are having a hard time listening to Jenny on 60
Second Recap.....here is another option:  you can look at the
instructions for the week and search for other videos on the topic, or just go to Sparknotes, Cliffnotes, or Snopes to read about what you need to know.  For instance, this week, you are supposed to take notes over the theme and plot of 1984.  If you don't want to listen to Jenny, then find the info elsewhere.  If you choose to go elsewhere to find info, you MUST give me the source you used.

Under each section heading of the notes, you need to have at least 5-7 well thought-out sentences to receive full credit for this assignment.
(1 hour)

Note:
Title of Document: "7.3; Name of Novel" Notes

Your job for this assignment?
~Read the "plot overview"

~write 12 bullet statements listing the
events of the plot in order, as well as the characters
and setting  (who did what, when?)

After listing your bullet statements, write about the role of adults in the novel.  Are they part of the children's world?  Do they help the children to grow and mature?  Are they absent from the children's lives?  Are they selfish and more interested in their own lives....ignoring the children?  I would like 250 words on this topic. You may need to do a bit of research rather than just relying on the summary for your info.

Assignment 7.7

College Students Only

This week, I would like you to focus on one particular thing you learned from class this week and write exclusively on that topic.  For example, if an event happened in Oliver Twist that really made you think, write about it, or if something happened at home, write about it.  It doesn't have to be a learning experience necessarily from the course material, it may be an experience that happened while 'living life"

To receive full credit, you should have 15-20 well-thought out sentences (which means several paragraphs written in correct form...topic sentences with support)
