Assignment 14.5
In this assignment, you will be clicking on the novel icon below.  This will take you to the Sparknotes website for the novel.

Your job for this assignment?
~Read the "plot overview"

~write 12 bullet statements listing the
events of the plot in order, as well as the characters
and setting  (who did what, when?)

~from these bullet statements, write a one paragraph
summary of the plot.  Make sure you include the setting,
the main characters, and what happened in the story.  Also, a good summary includes the basics of the entire storyline, rather than just the beginning, or your favorite parts.

~write a well-developed response to the novel.  Did you like it?  Did you hate it?  Why?

Here is how "your response" should be done:
First sentence MUST tell me whether you liked the story or not and include your two reasons why you liked or didn't like the story.  The rest of that first paragraph MUST support your first reason with examples from the novel to back up your reasoning.  The second paragraph MUST support your second reason with examples from the novel.

Remember:  The second sentence in the first paragraph MUST be your topic sentence for the first reason.  The first sentence of the second paragraph MUST be your topic sentence for the second reason.

The "response" to the story must be 5-7 well-developed sentences for each of the two paragraphs to receive full credit.

Note:  Always submit your Summary/Response Paper as:
Title of Document: "14.5; Summary/Response--Name of Novel"

Assignment 14.6
Discussion Board  Initial Comment.
Go to the Discussion Board on the Blackboard Site (like you were taught in the video) and write your initial comment on one of the topics below (once a topic is submitted on the discussion board, you are not allowed to choose it...so be quick and get your topic early)  Required to write at least ONE well-thought out paragraph.

Of Mice and Men
~The setting here is very specific. Do the events of the story only apply to this particular place and time, or can the novel be thought of as universally applying to humans everywhere?
~Why does George have to give up the idea of the dream farm once Lennie kills Curley's wife? Was the farm ever a real possibility?
~How are the deaths of Candy's dog and Lennie related? Why do the two have to die? Is it fair to draw a comparison between these two events? Are Candy's dog's death and Lennie's death just different degrees of the same kind of thing?
~Does George have the right to kill Lennie? Legally? What about ethically? How does Steinbeck's treatment of Lennie's murder affect the way the reader interprets the event? What does George's action suggest about justice?
~What is Steinbeck saying about dreams? Is the book's take-home message inherently pessimistic one? Should we all just give up and stop dreaming?
~Discuss the relationship between George and Lennie.

Les Miserables
~What are the factors leading to Fantine’s decline?
~What ultimately drives Javert to suicide?
~Discuss the ways in which Valjean both helps and hinders Cosette as she becomes an adult.
~Why does Valjean condemn himself when his crime was nothing more than stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s children?
~Why is Cosette not given more depth of character?

Assignment 14.7
Last assignment of the week:

College Students Only

This week, I would like you to focus on one particular thing you learned from class this week and write exclusively on that topic.  For example, if an event happened in Oliver Twist that really made you think, write about it, or if something happened at home, write about it.  It doesn't have to be a learning experience necessarily from the course material, it may be an experience that happened while 'living life"

To receive full credit, you should have 10-15 well-thought out sentences (which means several paragraphs written in correct form...topic sentences with support)

(30 minutes)

Submit 14.7 by April 19 (10 points)

If you are here...YOU ARE DONE FOR THE WEEK!!  You really should start thinking about what you are planning on buying Mr. Leiter for his birthday.

Assignment 14.2
Read the following poems this week:
1.  Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
2.  My Last Duchess
3.  Gunga Din
4.  The Man He Killed
5.  The Tiger
6.  Oh Captain, My Captain
7.  Chicago

For this assignment, I would like you to do the following for FIVE poems.

1)  identify the theme or central message of the poem.  What is the poem teaching or sharing with the reader?  Give me one good paragraph
2)  in your research on the poem, what kind of cool stuff did you find out?  I want quantity as well as quality.  Don't just give me a sentence or two on each poem....I want a good paragraph.

Note:  It is important to research each poem briefly so you are not only giving your ideas and thoughts, but also other's as well.

Assignment 14.1
Continue reading Oliver Twist this week.  Read pp 348-392 of the book for this week.

For this assignment, I would like you to give me "bullet" statements of what has happened in this week's reading.  Also, make comments on at least 4 of the bullet statements.  The comments you make should each be about 4 sentences long with your thoughts, not a "resummary" of what you read.
