Unit #13
April 6-12
Assignment 13.2
Read the following poems this week:
1.  Seven Ages of Man
2.  Crossing the Bar
3.  Death
4.  Jabberwocky
5.  The Road Not Taken  (especially take the time to explore this poem)

Here is a video I made on "The Road Not Taken" and additional ramblings.

For this assignment, I would like you to do the following for EACH poem.
1)  define all sensory uses (what was seen, smelled, felt, heard, or tasted)  For example,
In "All the World's A Stage"
"The whining schoolboy"....annoying vocal sounds telling the reader he doesn't want to go
"creeping like snail"...slowly trudging along, dreading

What I want is a sensory description of what is being said in the poem....you have plenty of freedom to do this....there are tons, so just give me 5 for each poem.  Kind of give me the perception you are getting from the sensory things happening in the poem.  What visual are you seeing, or what are you hearing?

2)  identify the theme or central message of the poem.  What is the poem teaching or sharing with the reader?
3)  in your research on the poem, what kind of cool stuff did you find out?  I want a paragraph on each of the first 4 poems....and 3 paragraphs for "The Road Not Taken"

Note:  It is important to research each poem so you are not only giving your ideas and thoughts, but also other's as well.

Discussion Board  Initial Comment.
Go to the Discussion Board and write your initial comment on one of the topics below.  In this assignment, each topic can be chosen by three of you for the discussion board.  Required to write at least ONE well-thought out paragraph.

Brave New World
~Is the ending to Brave New World at all optimistic? For any of the characters?
~In Animal Farm, the leaders control by force.  In Brave New World, leaders control with pleasure.  Which do you think is most effective and why?
~Did you notice that some characters drop out of the action? Like Bernard, for example: we don't know what really ends up happening to him. Does this suggest he's ultimately not that important?
~Does the novel have any other loose ends it fails to tie up? If so, does that seem intentional, and what effect does it have?
~How are the castes distinguished from each other? What is their purpose?

Assignment 13.7
Last assignment of the week:

College Students Only

This week, I would like you to focus on one particular thing you learned from class this week and write exclusively on that topic.  For example, if an event happened in Oliver Twist that really made you think, write about it, or if something happened at home, write about it.  It doesn't have to be a learning experience necessarily from the course material, it may be an experience that happened while 'living life"

To receive full credit, you should have 10-15 well-thought out sentences (which means several paragraphs written in correct form...topic sentences with support)

If you are here...YOU ARE DONE FOR THE WEEK!!  Probably should eat some cold turkey and stuffing...although I like to put gravy on the stuffing and warm it up in the microwave.

Weekly Video (watch this before doing anything else this week)
Assignment 13.1
Continue reading Oliver Twist this week.  Read pp 297-348 of the book for this week.

Choose one of the following to do for this assignment:

1.  For this assignment, I would like you to give me "bullet" statements of what has happened in this week's reading.  Also, make comments on at least 4 of the bullet statements.  The comments you make should each be about 4 sentences long with your thoughts, not a "resummary" of what you read.

2.  pretend you are "thrown into" the story this week as an extra character.  Who would you be, what would your relationship be to Oliver and the others in this section of the reading, what would you do in the story now that you can make changes.  This is kind of like going into the past and being able to influence what goes on in the story to  make it happen the way you would like.  You can just narrate and tell me what you would do and what the results would be like, or you can write a  journal about your experience, you can create a monologue, etc.  This needs to be about 400 words.
